Grease a standard loaf pan and sift 4 cups of bread flour into a large, warm bowl.
Add 1 large egg, 4 tablespoons softened butter, 2 teaspoons active dry yeast, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar to the flour.
Gradually mix in 1 cup warmed milk, kneading until dough is smooth and elastic. You may not need all the milk.
Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm spot for 1 hour.
After rising, knead the dough briefly, shape it, and place it into the prepared loaf pan.
Let the dough rise again for 45 minutes in a warm spot until puffed.
Before baking, brush the top with beaten egg or milk for a golden finish.
Bake in a 450°F oven for 15 minutes, then reduce temperature to 425°F and bake for an additional 20 minutes.
Remove from oven when golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. Cool before slicing.
